Hitting Your First Forehand

Forehand Grip: Semi-western
The most popular forehand grip is the semi western, but it is not the only grip you can use.  Other grips, less common among professionals, include the continental grip and the western grip.  It is important that you know the pros and cons of each grip before making a choice.

Where to start:
For beginners, it is likely that the first shot you will hit is the forehand groundstroke.  In order to hit the forehand correctly you must start with these basic fundamentals:

  1. Stand sideways (body facing right side of the court)
  2. Establish the Proper Grip (semi-western or continental)
  3. The racquet must be back(pointed towards the back of the court)
  4. Follow through over your shoulder
What to take away from this article:
One of the biggest problems tennis players face is that players to not start off with the basic fundamentals.  Players will learn the wrong way and be reluctant to change.  If you are just beginning, it is extremely important that you remember two things.  Keep your racquet all the way back and finish over your shoulder.
