Al "SKIP" South is currently the Head Women's
Tennis Coach at the University of New Haven. He is going into his 11th year at that position. He has also been the Head Boys coach at Notre Dame High School in West Haven since 1993, where he has compiled a 154-105 record finishing the 2008 season at 14-3.He also is the director of children and adult indoor clinics at the Yale University Cullman Courts and has taught there for over 20 years. In 2005 he was named the USPTA New England Coach of the Year and the following spring of 2006 was named the New Haven Register High School Coach of the Year.
He was a volunteer at the Special Olympics Summer Games in 1995 and was also a Volvo Jewell Productions Grass Roots coach from 1990 to 1996 and Head coach of their Excellence Team in 1995 and 1996. Skip has been a USPTA certified Pro since 1993 and is also a Connecticut State Verifier since 1999.
He also started, along with Duke Diaz the Director of Tennis and Track at Yale, the Yale Tennis Camp in 1993 which has just completed its 16th year.
Still an avid tennis player he has been in some of the same tennis groups since 1974. He has coached many men's and women's USTA teams and captained a 5.0 mixed doubles team 1990 & 1991 to regional and sectional championships. In 1999 and 2000 captained and coached a 9.0 combined mixed doubles team to the
Connecticut championships and sectional finals. Skip has taught clinics with the likes of Mary Jo Fernandez, Pam Schriver, Tony Trabert, Tracey Austin, Monica Seles, Wayne Bryant and Luke and Murphy Jensen.
