Hitting A Volley For the First Time

Grip:

*The correct grip for the volley is the continental grip.

What to know:

The volley is an extremely important stroke in tennis.  The volley is used to hit the ball before it bounces.  This shot should only be used when you are at or close to the net.  A volley should never be hit near  the baseline (back of the court).

Fundamentals:

1.     Stand facing the net

2.     Keep your elbow tucked into your side!

3.     Keep the racquet head pointed up at a 45 degree angle.

4.     Forehand:  Meet the ball with your palm facing out (towards the net)

5.     Backhand:  Meet the ball with your knuckles facing out (towards the net)

Most important tip:

Do NOT swing at the ball.  The volley is not meant to be a powerful shot.  The most important thing to remember when hitting a volley is that placement is everything!  Work on controlling the ball with the angle of the racquet rather than swinging.  You will notice that I described the contact point as “meeting the ball.”  You do not swing at a volley.  Simply place the ball where you wish with angles rather than power.
